Hollywood has always been a two faced monster, chewing up and spitting out directors, actors, actresses at will. You will be reminded that it’s the ‘business’ or ‘it’s all about the money’

There is once scene in this wonderfully crafted documentary in which Roger Corman is being interview on a chat show. Corman shows complete disdain to how Hollywood thinks money equals success, why a picture should cost 35 million dollars and the names he has found himself being labeled with. This is the same Hollywood that felt it necessary to award him with a lifetime achievement Oscar decades down the line and I would have been furious was it not for the beaming smile on the face of Corman himself and his peers. 

Corman lives for cinema and film making, guerrilla if you will. If it can’t be done he will make it so, if it will cost too much then find another way, if the actors want more money well tough shit. We all know his films are not masterpieces but his crowning glory Intruder was cast aside and put down when in reality he was way ahead of the curve. Not one to moan he picked himself up and continued in the vein he always had. He has directed and produced well over 400 films and given career opportunities to some of Hollywoods mainstays and legends of today, and you only need to see Jack Nicholsons reaction at the end of the documentary to see how much Corman means to these people today. 

There is a generation of film fans that will not know who Corman is or what he has done for independent cinema and it’s a crying shame. A man who is still at work today making films such as Dinoshark, this just highlights his love for cinema no matter how low budget the picture may be. 

A truly fascinating and eye opening watch, a definite must see.
