125. Peur Sur La Ville (Fear Over The City)

A killer calling himself Minos, bitter from the lack of free love in the 60’s decides to kill off promiscuous females around Paris who then sends pieces of a pictorial jigsaw after each crime to build a picture of his profile. Jean-Paul Belmondo portrays Latelier, a quite eccentric police with a taste for the theatrical. The stunts in this film are truly mind blowing and the rooftop chase is simply breath taking.

Directed by Henri Verneuil the film owes a huge debt to Castellari, De Leo and Martinelli and of course the origins of the Poliziotteschi genre as a whole. A rather phoned in soundtrack by Morricone is quite unusual for him, slightly disappointing and there are quite long sequences with not even a note.

This is well worth seeking out and the Canal+ releases is as good as you’ll find.
